Book Review: “Walk Like You Have Somewhere To Go”

“Walk Like You Have Somewhere To Go” by Lucille O’Neal with Allison Samuels.
Lucille O’Neal is the mother of sport icon Shaquille O’Neal. This book tells her story and shows the process she went through to change “From Mental Welfare to Mental Health”. Offering a incredibly different look at life and humanity from many different angles.
This book surprised me from beginning to end. It’s complicated, it’s nuanced and you never reach a point where you can sit down and say “these are the good guys, these are the bad guys.”
It’s never that simple and no-one is that clean. We’re continuously hit from all sides with a barrage of questions and things to think about.
We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s not where you come from. It’s where you’re going.” None of us can control where we come from, but we do have a say in where we are going. While these circumstances could have, and probably would have, given many people an excuse for failure or mediocre living. The O’Neal’s chose not to be defined by the unfortunate circumstances in their life over which they had no control. Instead, they made the most out of every opportunity afforded each of them.
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” The O’ Neal’s have made this their mantra, and it is after this same spirit of hope and determination they pattern their lives. Now, they are on a mission to share with others. They want people to know that the way things start does not have to be the way they finish.
Challenges can be overcome, relationships can be mended, and prosperity is possible for anyone one who seeks it. This book is a must-read for families, parents, and professionals.
