This movie is about the gens de couleur libres, or free people of color, who lived in New Orleans before the Civil War. The gens de couleur libres were the descendants of European settlers of Louisiana, particularly the French and Spanish and people of African descent. It was a common practice for the early caucasian settlers to free these children by their slave mistresses. Their mistresses however, were not all enslaved, some were free women of color whose families had been free for several generations. This eerie ghost story with a twist reaches back o the days of slavery and underground railroads. Spooky antics begin when a modern-day black family moves into a historic old house that seems to be haunted by murdered abolitionist Dies Drear. Dramatic special effects help build suspense as Walter Small and his son Thomas seek to discover the secrets of the legendary haunted house. Featuring an award-winning cast: Oscar nominee Howard Rollins, Jr. (Ragtime, A Soldiers Story), Emmy nominee Moses Gunn (Roots), Shavar Ross (Booker, Different Strokes), and Joe Seneca (A Time to Kill, Malcom X ).

A lovely small-scale comedy about the commonplace mating rituals in a Dominican section of Manhattan. It’s summer, and everyone is on the prowl, but the neighborhood is friendly and peaceful; chickens run through the alleys, and small gardens pop up here and there among the projects. The boys act cocky even when they’re unsure of themselves, and the girls pretend they don’t need boys. Nothing very important happens, but, moment by moment, the movie is alive with the play of gestures and glances, the faces of aggression and withdrawal.

This controversial, 1984 made-for-television movie gave Farrah Fawcett her first true showcase as an actress. Playing an abused wife who kills her monstrous husband (Paul Le Mat), Fawcett demonstrates a facility with the moral ambiguities of the story, which concerns the painful but fascinating questions of where justice lies. If for no other reason, though, Fawcett’s performance is a must-see, and she’ll numb you. It remains perhaps her greatest acting achievement!
I just watched this movie for the 1st time, last year, and it left a lasting impression on my mind.
